Rivian For The Manhattan MTA Bus Network

Rivian is an electric vehicle company which specialises in mostly utility vehicles. They have dominated the electric consumer truck industry for many years and in 2021 they began to produce the mainsail electric van platform for many of Amazon’s DSP (Delivery Service Partners).
Rivian has a minimalist and utilitarian design philosophy which lends well to the types of vehicles they produce. The circular curves and mostly rectilinear and planar design offers a robust and reliable vehicle which is also aesthetically appealing.
My exploration of the Rivian platform has yielded an interesting design opportunity which exists in the realm of the New York City Metropolitan Transit Authority (MTA).
Many are aware of New York City’s extensive and accessible public transportation network. The bus system in particular in 2025 has been a very hot topic because of the prospective mayor Zohran Mamdani’s plan to make this service free of charge.
Another mainstay of Manhattan’s streets are the double decker touring buses which bring riders to iconic landmarks and other notable New York sights.

I present the opportunity for a combination of the MTA Bus and the Double Decker Tour bus to help handle the increase in capacity requirements resulting from the removal of the fares.

As fares are removed from the MTA, the ridership will rise immensely. In order to maintain efficient service we need two things, more buses, and more bus capacity per unit. To accomplish these goals I have come to a distinct design solution which uses the company Rivian and the MTA.

Since we will need new buses, I believe that Rivian could play a pivotal role in manufacturing a double decker articulating MTA bus specifically for use in the borough of Manhattan. This would not only increase bus route capacity in Manhattan but allow for the current Manhattan fleet of buses to be dispatched to other boroughs to handle the increase in capacity.

Rivian is a perfect company for this purpose as their experience in supplying Amazon DSP and revolutionizing the electric truck industry lends to a robust and reliable potential platform for the MTA.
